Chapter 17

Reaction

It wasn’t what the aliens described on the broadcasted videos and news feeds, it was the similarity of the beings interviewed. At first, many people of Earth focused on the process. Then the shock of realizing that humans were not alone in the universe set in even after the first discovery was made public. A quiet stun settled over the blue planet until many on Earth started asking questions. Some wanted to know more, some telling their neighbors, “I told you so,” some thought it was a governmental conspiracy, and others committed suicide rather than face the disturbing truth that humans have to share the universe.

Religions all over the world were in a quandary. Prior to the alien’s appearance, ministers and priests taught God made man, the only being in the universe in his image; how were these faithful leaders to explain these new people? Since the ahmans looked quite similar to humans, it wasn’t too hard to explain their features; but their body reproduction was something else that seemed unholy. After the first interview, deadly riots had broken out. All of the Mid-East cut all ties with Europe and the Americas. Religious parishioners were demanding answers. Everyone on Earth still stayed glued to their television, somewhat fearful or hopeful as the human population awaited new communication from these visitors. Spanning from modern societies to the jungles of Earth, many thought the ahmans were gods. Others on Earth thought these new people would relieve their misery from this world; and some calculated how to become rich with various enterprises of toys, tools and TV shows. After several months, the petty squabbles amongst countries, religious ideologies, territorial disputes, and economic classes quieted down. The news media tried to stir up controversy to generate ratings, but the general public wasn’t listening. Many humans from all classes felt their world was coming to an end.

Alice had just finished feeding Frederick when she decided to visit the cafeteria for a snack before her next shift with the Reverend. She walked into the dining area and looked around noticing that some staff members were in the room eating something or playing cards. Then she saw Olivia Crane, deep in thought, crouching over her work etablet. Alice reached into a bowl and drew out a large oatmeal cookie. Choosing a cup of hot chocolate from the steel serving machines near the door, she proceeded toward Olivia.

“Hi, Miss Crane, are you busy? If you are, I’ll move over there,” Alice asked as she pointed to another table.

Olivia looked up, focusing on who interrupted her thoughts. “Oh, Alice...no... come sit down. There is so much I need to ask you,” she spoke, placing her tablet in resting mode.

Alice took a seat across from Olivia and put her food and warm cup down upon the table.

“OK, shoot,” Alice stated, looking Olivia in the eye.

“You have been talking to one of these ahmans, I gather. What is your take on them? Are they to be trusted?”

“Well, as much as one could be, I have been talking to a young one, Emel.
